Frequently Asked Questions....

What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts that has been used for thousands of years. It is based upon the understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a normal functioning nervous system (especially the spine and the nerves extending from the spine to all parts of the body). Your nervous system controls millions and millions of functions within your body and any interference within that nervous system inevitably leads to dysfunction. That dysfunction may multiply until eventually symptoms are present. Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of many diseases is the body’s inability to adapt to it’s environment. It looks to address these diseases not with the use of drugs and chemicals, but by locating and adjusting a musculoskeletal area of the body which is functioning improperly.

What conditions benefit from chiropractic care?
Although most people associate chiropractic care with back or neck pain and headaches, studies have found it to be very effective for a variety of conditions. These conditions include but are not limited to arthritic changes, hip dysfunction, shoulder pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, infantile colic and pregnancy discomfort.
Does Chiropractic care hurt?
Under normal circumstances, an adjustment should not hurt. A patient may experience some discomfort during the adjustment which is often related directly to the condition of the associated musculature. There are many different techniques available to your Doctor and he/she will employ those that are the least invasive and the most effective.
What is a Chiropractic adjustment?
Is Chiropractic care safe?
Chiropractic adjustments are extremely safe. Your Doctor of Chiropractic is very highly trained to choose the appropriate technique and to perform that technique in an controlled and precise manner. The risk of injury is very minimal and to give you an example, taking aspirin on a daily basis is approximately 200 times more dangerous than receiving a chiropractic adjustment.
What kind of education and training do Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) have?
Chiropractors receive an education very similar to your typical medical doctor. Thousands of hours of study are required involving anatomy, physiology, histology, biochemistry, pathology, neurology, radiology and clinical diagnosis. Also extensive training in various chiropractic techniques and clinical decision making are required. Each Doctor may choose to specialize in a field such as pediatrics, geriatrics, sports medicine, or become a general practitioner. Each student will spend a year working with patients in a clinical setting under the direct supervision of a Licensed Doctor of Chiropractic. In addition to the strenuous academic requirements, each student must pass national board exams that test that students competency in each subject studied. You must pass each aspect of these exams before you are eligible to apply for state licensure.

What can I expect on my first visit?
On your initial visit you will be asked to complete an intake form that details your medical history. The Doctor will then review your history with you, ask further questions to clarify details and provide you with any answers concerning care that you may have. The Doctor’s goal is to determine the true nature of the illness and design a plan that will be most effective in treating the problem.

At this time a physical examination will be performed in accordance with your Doctor’s clinical judgment. The Doctor may also refer you out for additional diagnostic procedures such as x-rays or laboratory analysis.
